The Sleep Solution

Book Review: The Sleep Solution

Book Review: The Sleep Solution

Hey guys! It’s time for another book review.http://www.thankyourbody.com/end-insomnia-naturally/ I love reading and have read my fair share of gems and… uh, not-so-gem-like books. Please know that I will ONLY review books that I have read and LOVE. My hope is that for those readers looking for more thorough knowledge than just a blog post may find the right book for them. You can check out my other book reviews here.
During my Freshman year of college my roommates and I participated in a talent show. We “wowed” the audience with a cheesy dance and lip-synced routine to a Barenaked Ladies Song, Who Needs Sleep:
Who needs sleep? Well you’re never going to get it. Who needs sleep? Tell me what’s that for. Who needs sleep? Be happy with what you’re getting. There’s a guy who’s been awake since the second world war.”
Fast-forward ten or so years later and that song was no longer funny.
It was my life.

Who needs sleep? I do!

I’ve never been a great sleeper. For as long as I can remember I’d go through a roller-coaster cycle of insomnia. I would have trouble going to sleep or wake up in the middle of the night with my mind racing. This would last a week or two until I was so tired and then I’d get a couple weeks of decent sleep. Repeat.
But after the birth of my daughter, my body went into a whirlwind of chronic, deep insomnia. Beyond the sleepless newborn phase, my body struggled to go to sleep and stay asleep long after my little girl finally slept through the night (which, for the record, wasn’t until she was 19 months old).

I tried everything.

With the exception of drugs, that is. I tried yoga, essential oils, herbal teas, relaxing music, turning all the lights off in my house by 6:30, going to bed consistently early, no television, no clocks, hypnosis, earthing mats, acupressure… you name it. If it was natural and someone anywhere had written about it, I tried it.
End your insomnia naturally.
But things got worse before they got better.
The breaking point was when I had five nights in a row of not being able to fall asleep until after 4 A.M. (For the record, I go to bed early every night and since my little girl wakes up at 5 or 6). And this was after nearly two years of horrible sleep already. I finally went to my doctor/homeopath (really, I should have gone much sooner). Between her expertise, some blood work, and my desperate desire to get over my sleep issues I was finally able to get to the root problems. From there I continued researching.

Gotta love those hormones.

Hormones affect virtually every single one of your body’s functions, and have a profound impact on all its physiological systems. - The Sleep Solution
The more I learned about hormonal balance and how the hormones are affected by glucose metabolism, I was finally able to piece together an action plan to get more sleep. And it worked!
I’m finally getting sleep. (Or at least I was… then I had another baby. Ha! But I’m sleeping better now with a newborn than I was with a toddler who slept through the night.)

The Sleep Solution

The Sleep Solution EbookEmily Benfit, the quick-witted and super smart brains of Butter Believer has put together an amazing resource on how to overcome your insomnia:  The Sleep Solution: End your insomnia naturally.
While I have come a long way and learned a lot (mostly the hard way), I SO wish I had this book when I was struggling to get quality sleep.
She covers the basics that most other sleep books cover: Circadian rhythms, creating the ideal sleep environment, sleep cycles, supplements, etc. All good information and stuff you can find in other books.
But beyond all that, she also gets to the root problem.
Emily discusses in length the importance of balanced hormones, metabolic health, and how the two are connected. In other words, she gets it. She goes beyond some useful tips on improving your odds of sleep.

The root cause of insomnia

What I discovered the hard way, and what Emily covers so beautifully, is that blood glucose management is a function of the body’s metabolism which is regulated by the thyroid which regulate the hormones involved in sleep disruption. Knowing the root problem is key as you move forward to solving your insomnia. And The Sleep Solution does a great job of helping you overcome the root problem and ending your insomnia naturally.
Emily will teach you:
  • How to test for low thyroid function and low metabolism
  • How to balance your hormones to help you sleep quicker, longer, and deeper
  • How to minimize stress
  • What nutrients support metabolic health
  • How to help regulate your circadian rhythms
  • How to create a healthy bedtime routine
  • How to deal with middle-of-the-night wakings

Recipe: Easy Cajun Red Beans with Rice

Tuesdays are my crazy day.  In addition to the usual homeschool load, both daughters have art classes (conveniently scheduled at different times!) and I teach a science co-op class. Dinner gets squeezed into the hour between class and a weekly meeting at 6:45, and if I don’t plan ahead? Well, Tuesday dinners can easily become a disaster in which everyone has to fend for themselves, pulling whatever they can find out of the fridge to stuff in their mouths as they dash out of the house! It’s happened before, I confess. So I have been trying to plan ahead and use that most useful of kitchen devices:  The slow cooker!  Cajun Red Beans and Rice is a savory, warming meal that not only requires very little time to prepare, but also leaves us with plenty of leftovers.  Which can come in handy, since Wednesdays are nearly as crazy as Tuesdays!

This is an easy recipe that I remember from my childhood, and one that’s a go-to when I know I have a busy week ahead. The hardest thing about Cajun Red Beans and Rice is remembering to get the beans out the night before to soak them!
Busy day? Easy Cajun Red Beans with Rice in the slow cooker will be ready for dinner!
Once the beans have soaked overnight, you just throw them in your slow cooker and add some chopped onion, a bay leaf, and fresh garlic. Throw in some meat if you want…chopped organic chicken, or nitrate-free organic sausage work well.
Busy day? Easy Cajun Red Beans with Rice in the slow cooker will be ready for dinner!
Toss in some homemade Cajun seasoning, cover it all with water, and let the slow-cooker work its magic! By dinner time, you’ll have savory beans in a thick broth to serve over steamed rice. And as a bonus, your house will smell terrific all day as it cooks!

Easy Cajun Red Beans with Rice

(This recipe makes a lot! It will serve 6 people for 2 meals. Perfect for freezing for later, leftovers, or a large crowd…or cut the recipe in half if you’d like.)
Ingredients:
32 ounces of dry, organic small red beans (sorted and soaked overnight)
1 large organic onion, chopped
5 cloves of organic garlic, pressed
1 bay leaf
Organic, nitrate free sausage (14 ounces) or 2 organic, free range chicken breasts, finely chopped (meat is optional)
Cajun Seasoning (from this recipe):
2 teaspoons sea salt
2 teaspoons organic garlic powder
2 1/2 teaspoons organic paprika
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon organic ground cayenne pepper
1 1/4 teaspoon organic dried thyme
1 1/4 teaspoon organic dried oregano
Steamed rice of your choice (I like Jasmine rice!)

Directions:
1. The night before, sort and soak your beans. Beans should be soaked at least 8 hours.
2. Rinse the beans, and pour them into your slow cooker. Add the chopped onion, garlic, meat (if you’re using it) and bay leaf.
3. Combine the spices  for the Cajun seasoning in a bowl, mix well. Sprinkle over the beans (I like to use all the seasoning, but  you may use less if you like).
4. Cover the beans completely with water, with an extra 1-2 inches of water over the beans (they will swell as they cook, and in the last hours of cooking the water thickens into a broth).
5. Plug in your slow cooker, and let the beans cook on low all day! I allow at least 7-8 hours for cooking.
6. Before dinner, steam or boil the rice of your choice. Stir the beans well, season with extra sea salt to taste, and serve the beans in a bowl over the rice.
Store leftovers in the fridge, or freeze them for a quick meal later! The beans can be thawed overnight in the fridge and reheated on another busy day.

Recipe: Gingerbread with Honey Nutmeg Whipped Cream

What could be better than a warm piece of gingerbread on a blustery day? A warm piece of gingerbread with honey nutmeg whipped cream on top, of course!  This gingerbread can be made gluten or grain free, and applesauce replaces most of the butter in the recipe. The whipped cream is made with raw cream, sweetened with honey, and spiced with nutmeg. It’s a family favorite at our house this time of year, and a fun dessert that has a bit of old-fashioned flare.Try this gingerbread made with fresh ginger and applesauce, topped with whipped cream sweetened with honey and spiced with nutmeg!
Full of simple, healthy ingredients, this gingerbread is a dessert you don’t have to feel guilty about. You can use organic wheat flour or a gluten free blend, or a combination of coconut and almond flours for a grain free option. Molasses (check out the benefits of molasses!) and freshly-grated ginger give this cake its ginger-snap flavor, and applesauce replaces most of the fat in the cake. The whipped cream tops this perfectly, a cool and creamy addition sweetened with raw honey and spiced with a touch of nutmeg. It’s as easy to make as brownies, a fun change of pace for dessert!

1/2 cup organic, apples-only applesauce

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

2. In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients for the cake and mix well.
3. Pour the batter into the greased pan, and bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.

Welcome, Caitlin of  Grass Fed Girl:

I never had saffron or even truffles in my life until I met my husband here in San Francisco, CA. He is a professional chef and he grew up in French speaking country where truffles and Saffron are common and even affordable. He made me this great slow cooked tajine which is a common dish North Africa. Truffles are pungent fungus that grow wild in the desserts of south Algeria and are exported worldwide. Truffle oil is more common and affordable in North America so we used that in this recipe. Saffron is also pricey but only a pinch is needs to give this dish a rich flavor and turn the broth a deep orange. Hope you enjoy this exotic taste vacation!

Chicken Truffle Tajine

Ingredients:
1 tbsp grass fed butter or ghee
1 lb chicken drumsticks
1 onion, diced
Sea salt and pepper to taste
1 pinch saffron (1 tsp turmeric can be substituted)
4 cups homemade chicken broth
8 oz whole mushrooms
1/4 cup chopped parsley
1-2 Tbsp Truffle oil

Looking for quality real food ingredients? Be sure to the check out the Village Green Marketplace!

Add in chicken and onion with a pinch of salt and pepper.
