Importance of fruits and vegetables

Importance of fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables provide many essential vitamins and minerals. Additionally, higher intakes of fruits and vegetables are associated with healthier lives including lower risks of cancer and coronary heart disease. It is recommended that children eat five fruits and vegetables a day. One of the newest campaigns in nutrition education is "5 a Day for Better Health." This slogan comes from the "Healthy People 2000: National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives." This particular objective promotes the consumption of 5 or more fruits and vegetables a day. Currently, children ages 6-12 eat an average of 2.5 fruits and vegetables a day, only half of the recommended servings. Education is needed to help increase consumption.
